SLO Bars Are Asked to End Graduation Tradition

Downtown San Luis Obispo bars are being asked to end a longtime Cal Poly graduation tradition. Cal Poly Vice President for Student Affairs Keith Humphrey and San Luis Obispo Mayor Jan Marx wrote a letter to the San Luis Obispo Downtown Association to request that all downtown bars wait until after 9:00 a.m. to serve alcohol on graduation weekend.

The bar crawl tradition for Cal Poly graduates is where students and their family members to go to the bars at 6:00 a.m. before the graduation ceremony. Humphrey and Marx say in the letter that Cal Poly has seen an increase in the number of students that are "intoxicated, disruptive, and disrespectful during commencement ceremonies, Cal Poly's most honored academic tradition." The letter is only a request, and Marx and Humphrey want to discuss the issue more with the downtown association.
