On March 14 at approximately 1:27 am, San Luis Obispo Police responded to the San Luis Inn and Suites at 404 Santa Rosa regarding an armed robbery and sexual assault. When officers arrived they discovered a female had been sexually assaulted and robbed at gunpoint.
The victim told officers that a male subject, later identified as Gregory Erwin, agreed to meet her at her hotel room sometime after midnight. When Erwin arrived at the victim’s room, he sexually assaulted her, then removed cash from her purse and left the area in a white Ford Ranger pick-up.
The victim told officers that during the assault Erwin pointed a handgun at her and threatened to kill her. She provided officers with a description of Erwin and the gun he used during the assault and robbery. When Erwin left the room the victim followed him to the parking lot and provided a license plate number of the Ford Ranger he drove away in to police.
Investigators from the San Luis Obispo Police Department responded to Erwin’s residence in the 200 block of W. Park St. in the City of Santa Maria where they found him attempting to leave in his vehicle. Erwin was taken into custody without incident. Investigators then obtained a search warrant for Erwin’s residence where evidence of the crime was recovered.
San Luis Obispo Police Investigators are continuing to investigate this crime, and are contacting other law enforcement agencies to determine if Erwin is responsible for other sexual assaults in the San Luis Obispo County area.
Erwin was charged with armed robbery, making terrorist threats, false imprisonment, burglary, and assault with a deadly weapon. He was later booked into the San Luis Obispo county jail.
