Santa Maria Goes to Court Against Advocacy Group

Santa Maria will be going to court against an advocacy group. The group, named CAUSE, is trying to get Santa Maria to change its election rules so city council members are elected by district rather than by the city at-large. CAUSE’s proposal needed more than 2700 signatures to be on the November ballot. The proposal ended up getting more than 5000 signatures in a two-month time span. But the city rejected the proposal on the grounds that it didn’t conform to the state election code. CAUSE believes that their errors are minor, and hence they are taking  the matter into court. A hearing is set for June 17.
