Possible Drowning Victim Saved With Help Of Bystanders In Cambria

Leffingwell-LandingOn Saturday March 2 at 11:30, Sheriff’s dispatch received a 9-1-1 call regarding a possible drowning victim at Leffingwell Landing in Cambria.  Cambria Fire Department, Cambria Ambulance, and Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene.

The victim, a seven-year-old female from Bakersfield, had been in the ocean and was swept away by a wave.  The victim’s uncle went into the ocean and brought her to shore assisted by two bystanders who were visiting from Fresno.

As the victim was brought onto the beach and 9-1-1 was called, an off-duty Pediatric Nurse also from the Fresno area saw the commotion and went to assist.  The Nurse and Sheriff’s Deputy Chad Nicholson administered life saving measures to expel water from the unconscious victim’s lungs and provided supportive care until Cambria Ambulance arrived on scene.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for observation.  According to hospital staff, the victim is currently in stable condition.

If not for the actions of the bystanders, family members, off-duty nurse, and quick response by Deputy Nicholson, the outcome for the victim could have been much worse.
