Fire crews continue to make headway on a more than 900-acre wildfire near Big Sur. At last report, the "Pfeiffer Fire" was almost 90% contained with full containment expected by 6:00 this evening. The blaze has consumed more than 20 homes with dozens of area residents still under evacuation orders. The cause is believed to be an illegal campfire on Buzzards Roost Trail.
Musician Al Jardine is thanking the hundreds of firefighters who caged the Pfeiffer Fire and stopped it from spreading to his Big Sur home. The Beach Boy’s ranch is perched above Wreck Beach and is dangerously close to where the blaze broke out Monday in the Los Padres National Forest. The fire torched over 20 homes in its path, but the flames never spread west enough to reach Jardine. The musician decided not to evacuate his home and instead stayed behind to shake firefighters' hands as they worked to battle the flames.
