San Luis Obispo -- Cuesta College has been put on probation. The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges notified the local community college yesterday. Cuesta was put on a warning status last January, and instructed to make improvements in nine areas. The Commission visited the college in October, and based on observations made during that visit, they put the college on probation. Cuesta will need to file a follow-up report by October of this year. Then the Commission will return in November to see if enough improvements have been made. They will then prepare another report in late January or early February of next year.
Cuesta College is also facing legal issues. A former women’s tennis coach has filed a Title IX complaint with the US Department of Education Office for Civil Rights. Title IX forbids gender discrimination at schools that receive federal funds, which in sports means equal opportunities for male and female athletes. Facing pressure to lower costs campus wide, Cuesta had suspended the woman’s tennis program in August to save $30,000.
