Mailbox Burglary in Los Osos

news@920kvec.com

Los Osos -- San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Coast Station deputies are investigating a mailbox burglary that led to fraud last month.  The victim, whose name wasn’t released, placed her mortgage payment check in the residential mailbox outside her home on 15th Street in Los Osos in mid November.

She was later notified by her mortgage company that the payment had not arrived. According to the Sheriff’s department, the victim checked with her bank and determined the check had been altered and cashed.  The suspect had apparently changed the check to a new name and amount and was able to pass the check at the bank.

Sheriff's Crime Prevention staff urges people to use ink pens that resist check alterations. These pens are available at most local office supply stores.
