Northern San Luis Obispo County -- CHP Officer Craig Rude told us about an accident yesterday morning that closed southbound Highway 101.
At about 6:40, a Volvo big rig was stopped on Welsona Road at the intersection with Highway 101, north of Paso Robels. The driver, 66-year-old Bobby Fortner, didn’t see any oncoming traffic, so he began to drive onto the highway. Fortner was crossing the southbound lanes to turn into the northbound traffic. At that time, 31-year-old Thomas Thein and 25-year-old Norgero Anaya were both driving south on Highway 101. Thein first collided with the side of the big rid, then Anaya hit Thein’s vehicle. Thein received major injuries in the collision; he was taken to the hospital.
The right southbound lane was reopened just before 7:30, and both lanes were open before 9am.
