San Luis Obispo -- Dan De Vaul is now behind bars. The rancher refused terms of probation that would have required him to bring a barn, where homeless have lived, up to code and remove vehicles from his property. Because of that refusal, De Vaul was sentenced to 90 days in San Luis Obispo County Jail.
He read a statement in court saying the law is open to interpretation and that he felt a disconnect between what the people of the county want and what law enforcement is doing.
According to the Tribune, Judge John Trice, who’s overseen the case, feels De Vaul was confusing the social issue of helping the needy and compliance with the law.
