San Luis Obispo -- A Cuesta College student has been diagnosed with a case of bacterial meningitis.  The San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department strongly suspects the 19-year-old man has meningococcal meningitis, which is a rarer variety of the infection.
SLO County gets an average of four cases of bacterial meningitis a year, and usually less than one case of the meningococcal strand.  According to the Tribune, an average of 125 people die from it nationwide each year.

The man is receiving treatment at Sierra Vista Hospital.  Cuesta College is working closely with the department of health to identify and treat anyone who came in contact with the student.
