San Luis Obispo, CA -- Yesterday afternoon at 4:58 San Luis Obispo City Fire Department personnel responded to a report of a 25-year-old, female hiker who complained of a possible broken leg at the top of Bishop Peak. The female hiker slipped while hiking down the mountain and could not walk due to her injuries. Her fiancé called 911 from his cell phone and assisted fire department personnel in locating the victim. SLO City fire crews with the assistance of Cal Fire and a rescue helicopter from Santa Barbara County Fire extricated the victim utilizing the hoist system on the rescue helicopter and had the victim safely transported to Sierra Vista Hospital in approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Fire crews were hindered by steep access points to the victim and the long hike up the mountain. The fall victim was transported to French Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
The San Luis Obispo Fire Department would like to remind you to be safe while hiking and remember to take along water, a flashlight, and a cell phone in case of an emergency.
