.A Los Angeles County law enforcement watchdog has been asked to examine Santa Maria police actions in the shooting death of a policeman when officers moved in to arrest him on teen sex charges. City Manager Rick Haydon told the Santa Maria City Council on Tuesday that the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department and independent internal affairs investigators will probe the Jan. 28 killing of Officer Alberto Covarrubias Jr.
Covarrubias was ending his shift at a DUI checkpoint when he was shot in a scuffle as detectives moved in to arrest him on charges of having sex with a 17-year-old girl.
The Santa Maria Times says the Office of Independent Review will conduct a thorough review of Police Department procedures after the sheriff's and internal affairs investigations.
