Inmate Commits Suicide, Another Attempts Suicide

San Luis Obispo, CA -- A San Luis Obispo County jail inmate was found unresponsive in his single man cell on Thursday afternoon shortly after 2:00 p.m. 53-year-old Kevin Lee Strahl, a transient, was in custody on failure to register as a sex offender and had been in court Thursday morning when his bail was raised from $10,000 to $15,000. His next hearing would have been tomorrow. A correctional deputy performing cell checks noted that Strahl appeared unresponsive and summoned emergency medical personnel and began CPR. Strahl was transported by ambulance to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. There were no signs of trauma and foul play is not suspected. An autopsy is scheduled for early next week.

In a separate incident, an inmate transferred to county jail from Atascadero State Hospital for assaulting a staff member in that facility was found hanging in another single person cell in the mental health unit of the jail. The man used his t-shirt to fashion a noose. A correctional deputy performing cell checks found the man at 4:39 p.m., summoned medical personnel who administered oxygen and revived the patient. He was transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released back to custody.
