Fifteen Hour Atascadero Standoff End With Arrest

Atascadero, CA -- A barricaded suspect surrendered to police after a 15 hour standoff and is now in San Luis Obispo County Jail.

Wednesday evening at about 11:38 pm officers from the Atascadero Police Department were dispatched to the 5700 block of Dolores Avenue to conduct a welfare check on a female resident who had called 911 on a cell phone.  When police arrived at the residence they could hear a male and female involved in a verbal altercation.  When they attempted to contact the residents the female along with her two juvenile children exited the house and the male subject later identified as Rudolph Charles Muravez, refused to talk to the officers.

Muravez then started to barricade the residence by placing furniture in front of doors and windows.  The female victim told the officers that the Muravez had told her that he was not going to jail and they would have to kill him.  While officers were attempting to talk to Muravez, he armed himself with an ice pick and machete and told the officers to leave the location.

Over the next 6 hours officers attempted to get Muravez to talk to them.  Police over the next nine hours made several attempts to get Muravez to exit the residence. At approximately 2:30 pm Muravez finally exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.

Muravez was transported to Twin Cities Hospital to be evaluated and medically screened prior to being booked at the San Luis Obispo County Jail. The 45-year-old Muravez was charged with felony domestic battery, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment and for an outstanding felony warrant for violation of his probation.
