San Luis Obispo, CA -- If you’ve been following the story of the S.S. Montebello, the oil tanker torpedoed by a Japanese sub and sunk with millions of gallons of crude oil on board in 1941, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Coast Guard and Department of Fish and Game officials say they've determined there is no substantial oil threat to the water or shorelines from the WWII era ship. Officials told KSBY, they have concluded with a “high level of confidence that there is no oil threat from the Montebello”.
They say the oil may have been released over time and remained offshore. Crews will now take hull samples of the ship to determine the corrosion status.
