Morro Bay, CA -- A vacant lot in Morro Bay has become the talk of the town and the center of controversy. The city's planning commission recently okay-ed plans to build a house on the land, but some neighbors aren't happy about it. The deadline to file an appeal of the project came and went on Monday night, and the city of Morro Bay received four of them. The property is at the top of Cerritos Peak at the southern end of Morro Bay. It is a unique piece of steep and rocky land that's a little more than an acre. The property owner wants to build a two-story, 3,200 square foot house on it. But, up to 30 eucalyptus trees will have to be torn out -- and that's just one of the gripes people have with the project. According to Morro Bay Public Services Director Rob Livick, “it's seen from many viewpoints." Including the cultural importance to the Native Americans in the area, both the Salinan and the Chumash tribes view it as an important site.
The Morro Bay Planning Commission has reviewed the project and it meets all city codes. The city council will hear appeals of the project in December.
