Trial Updates on Men Accused of Murder

Paso Robles, CA -- 34 year old Christopher Shumey, the man accused of shooting his mother Karen Shumey last month in his apartment, is scheduled back in court this morning for a pre-preliminary hearing. That means both the defense and the prosecution will see if he case can be resolved by a plea. Shumey was scheduled to enter a plea last month, but the judge rejected it, saying he needed more information about Shumey's history.

The trial of a local man accused of trying to kill his ex-girlfriend in Paso Robles last summer is scheduled to begin today. Troy Sykes has pleaded not guilty to two counts of attempted murder. Police say he got into a fight with a woman last July, leading to a shooting. The trial was delayed last month after Sykes had to switch lawyers.

A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for this morning for the man accused of a double murder in Santa Margarita last Christmas. Andrew Downs has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the murder charges. Doctors have been appointed to the case to evaluate Downs' mental health. Downs is charged with shooting and killing Beverly Reilly and Kathy Yeager.
