San Luis Obispo, CA -- Representatives from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission were in San Luis Obispo yesterday, talking about storage and transportation of spent nuclear fuel. The NRC held a public meeting at the Embassy Suites. San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Adam Hill told the representatives that concerns about waste storage at Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant is one issue that unites his pro-nuclear and anti-nuclear constituents, adding “It’s an awful legacy to hand off to later generations.” Yesterday’s meeting comes about a month after the NRC decided to allow for the closure of the controversial Yucca Mountain nuclear waste facility in Nevada. Like many plants, Diablo Canyon’s spent fuel pools are near their maximum storage capacity.
