San Luis Obispo, CA -- Early fall rains are adding to an already difficult growing season for vintners countywide. Some are scrambling to harvest what they can, before lingering moisture leads to rotting grapes. Many vintners brought in extra crews to get the job done. They say it only takes six to eight hours before the Botrytis fungus sets in, possibly destroying their crops. The season started with a frost in the spring, then cool summer temperatures, and now a rainy harvest that could add up to a low yield harvest. And it’s not just happening in San Luis Obispo County, vintners statewide are facing the same set of problems.
