San Luis Obispo, CA -- A 65-year-old Vandenberg Middle School teacher was shot and killed by her son Saturday afternoon. Reportedly, Karen Lee Shumey of Arroyo Grande was visiting her son, John Shumey, at his apartment on Beach Street in San Luis Obispo. The two got into an argument and that’s when neighbors heard gunfire. When the first officers arrived, Shumey reportedly fired one shot from a shotgun at the officers from a window in the upstairs apartment. The officers immediately took cover and were not injured. One officer talked Shumey into dropping the shotgun and surrendering. He then lowered himself from the window to the ground where he was taken into custody.Karen Shumey taught eighth grade in the Lompoc Unified School District, she had been with the district for more than 20 years.
