Cambria, CA -- The owner of the former Cambria Air Force Base pleaded no contest yesterday to one count of violating land-use law. Property owner Bernd Schaefers faced two misdemeanor charges involving coastal zone land-use law. The 69-year-old Schaefers was allegedly responsible for renovating two buildings without permits and a septic system on the property. He will receive no jail time but must pay a $1,000 fine. The 34-acre property, whose buildings are now deteriorating, was operated by the Air Force from the 1940s until 1980.
