On Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at approximately 11:17 PM, the Paso Robles Police Department communications center received a report from a female caller stating her ex-husband was chasing her in his vehicle as she drove in her vehicle westbound in the 100 block of Niblick Road.
The caller stated her ex-husband was driving recklessly and had used his vehicle to block her path and force her to stop her vehicle. During this process, the two vehicles had collided. Dispatchers kept the caller on the line and officers responded to the area. Officers located the involved vehicles in the 800 block of Spring Street and witnessed the reckless driving. Officers were able to stop the reckless vehicle and detain the driver without incident. This suspect was identified as 34 year old Paso Robles resident Ernesto Flores Duarte. The caller stopped her vehicle when she first noticed a marked police unit.
The investigation into this matter revealed the suspect had been stalking the victim and harassing her via text messages throughout the day. As the victim was driving through the city with her friend, suddenly the suspect’s vehicle appeared and the suspect began driving recklessly apparently attempting to force the victim’s vehicle off the road. This occurred numerous times as the vehicles travelled through the city, and at one point the two vehicles collided. The suspect was still engaging in this reckless driving when the responding officers located the vehicles in the 800 block of Spring Street.
Neither the victim nor her friend was injured during these events. Duarte was arrested and booked into the SLO County Jail on the following charges: two counts of assault with a deadly weapon (felony), stalking (felony), and driving on a suspended license (misdemeanor).
