The San Luis Obispo City Council voted last night to temporarily allow homeowners to rent out their homes for fewer than 30 days. Currently vacation rentals are illegal, but the ban will be lifted until further study. Proponents of vacations rentals said opening up their home allows them to be ambassadors to the city, and it provides them an extra income and added they would be willing to pay a transient occupancy tax, which could generate money for the local economy. It would also level the playing field with local hotels. Opponents say there is potential for more noise, parties, and traffic in the neighborhoods.
