Forty-one-year-old Voigt has ridden in seven of the eight editions of America’s Greatest Race, and has come close to the overall win, taking second place in 2007. Yesterday’s win marked the 66th victory of his illustrious career.

“I felt like I’m a little bit stronger than the other guys in the break, but of course less fast than the sprinters, so the only chance for me to win is to come here [to the finish line] alone,” said Voigt, who at 41 is the oldest licensed racer in the world. “I went all in, and it worked. I’m a really happy man tonight. This is not the twilight of my career. Let’s call it ‘Indian Summer.’”

Besting the second- and third-place finishers by a whopping six seconds with his solo attack in the final 2.5 miles of the race, Voigt also orchestrated the defining move of the day – a breakaway of 17 elite riders about 82 miles into the 115-mile stage from Santa Barbara to Avila Beach, which the NBC Sports Network announcers called “the best move of the race in the last five days.”     

Sensing a change in the punishing crosswinds as they rode through the town of Guadalupe, Voigt made a move to split the peloton, which forced overall leader Jose Acevedo (COL) of Team Jamis-Hagens Berman out of position, eventually causing him to lose the race’s overall lead. The group grew their advantage over the peloton to about a minute before reaching the tight turns in the final 200 meters to the finish. In addition to the stage win, these maneuvers also earned Voigt the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer® Most Courageous Rider Jersey yesterday.

The attack took place in a medium-custody yard. 39-year-old William Mikeworth was identified as the suspect. The two correctional officers were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Mikeworth is in prison for assault with a deadly weapon conviction.  The incident is being reviewed by CMC investigators and the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney's Office.

San Luis Obispo City Fire Department and Cal Fire personnel responded to a fire at the Poly Canyon Village Housing Complex at 7:48 last night.  A small fire was found in a four bedroom first floor suite in the Corralitos dormitory.

The buildings fire sprinkler system held the fire in check.  Firefighters were able to conduct a primary search for residents and extinguish the remaining fire.

Cal Poly University Police Officers and housing complex resident advisors evacuated the majority of the occupants of the 5-story building within the first 10 minutes of the incident.

Fire damage was limited to part of one bedroom and its contents.

Fire crews remained at the scene for two hours to assist building recovery, water removal, and restoration.

Cal Poly was able to provide temporary housing for all of the displaced first floor tenants.  No one was injured during the incident.

The property damage to the building is estimated to be more than $20,000.  The damage to contents and personal belongings is estimated to be more than $5,000.  According to Fire Marshall Roger Maggio, the fire started in a bedroom and the cause of the fire was an unattended candle.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Deputy Al Barger and his K-9 "Jack" were traveling northbound on Highway 101 at about 7:15 p.m. on Monday, when Barger noticed a car making several abrupt lane changes.  

Barger ran a check on the license plate and discovered the registration had expired.  He pulled the car over, which contained Garcia and her three children.

Barger found out Garcia had a prior criminal history of transporting drugs.  Garcia consented to a search of her car and had her three children leave the car.

The K-9 indicated drugs were in the back seat area.  Barger noticed the back seat was loose and removed it. This exposed a metal plate above the gas tank, which was missing a screw.  After removing the plate Barger found 13 one-pound plastic packages of meth floating in the gas tank.

Garcia was arrested and her three children, 5, 12 and 15-years-old were turned over to Child Protective Services.  Her bail is set at $1 million.

Cyclists will leave Santa Barbara on State Route 225 at 11 a.m, and continue on Highway 154 to Foxen Canyon Road.  Cyclists will use Highway 1 from Orcutt to Guadalupe and Highway 227 north leaving Arroyo Grande around 2:30 p.m.  The riders will head south on Ontario Road from Higuera Street before completing the stage in Avila Beach at 3 p.m.

The CHP will oversee the highway closure areas.

The on duty officer was able to contact the Atascadero Police Department Dispatcher via the radio to report the incident.

One of the drivers involved was transported to Twin Cities Hospital to be evaluated for a “complaint of pain” as a result of the collision.

The officer was also sent to the hospital to be evaluated.

The CHP and Atascadero Police Department are conducting the investigation.

A detectives from the Atascadero Police Department along with members of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff/Corner’s Office conducted a preliminary investigation into the death and it was determined that the deceased identified as 59-year-old James Richard Amundson was not the victim of foul play.

An autopsy is planned tomorrow. The Sheriff's Office is conducting the death investigation. The Atascadero Police Department is conducting the scene investigation.

When officers first attempted to contact Dempsey he refused to come to the door and hid in a storage area he was able to access from his bedroom.  He eventually surrendered to the officers without incident.

During the contact it was learned that Dempsey was also involved in a domestic violence incident involving his live-in girlfriend and had access to two firearms that were not legally registered.

Dempsey was charged with felony domestic violence, false imprisonment, being a felon in possession of firearms and for his warrant for violating the terms of his probation.  He was later transported to San Luis Obispo County Jail where he was booked on the above charges.

When the deputies attempted to contact Stewart she fled in her vehicle.  APD officers located the vehicle being driven by Stewart and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.  Stewart failed to yield to the officers and a vehicle pursuit ensued on several surface streets of Atascadero.

The pursuit reached speeds of approximately 65 MPH and included numerous vehicle code violations.  The pursuit ended when Stewart stopped her vehicle in front of a residence on Campbell Lane where she was taken into custody without further incident.

Stewart was placed under arrest for felony evading and for having fraudulent registration tabs on her vehicle.  This is the second time that Stewart has led APD officers on a pursuit.  The first time was in September 2010 with that pursuit ending in Los Osos with Stewart being taken into custody.
