Small Brush Fire in Atascadero


There was a vegetation fire near Atascadero last night. The fire was off of Curbaril Avenue, on the east side of Atascadero Pine Mountain Cemetery near the Salinas River. Attacks from the air began after 7. The fire burned a 20 by 50 foot area. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Woman Arrested for Allegedly Abducting Three-Year-Old


Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley says that Faith Merritt, of Carpinteria, was arrested and taken into custody today in Siskiyou County by the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office.  Merritt was being sought due to her alleged abduction of three-year old Maxwell DiNardo, a resident of Santa Barbara County.  It is further alleged that  Merritt shared joint custody of …

Haggan Seeking $1 Billion from Albertsons


Regional grocer Haggen is seeking over one-billion dollars in damages from one of its rivals.  The Washington-based chain has filed a lawsuit in Delaware, claiming Albertsons engaged in “coordinated and systematic efforts to eliminate competition” after Haggens purchased 146 former Albertsons stores last year.  The deal was the result of a Federal Trade Commission order after the merger of Albertsons …
