Rep. Lois Capps has voted to allow people to stay on their current healthcare plans throughout 2014. Recent cancellations of health plans by insurance companies as result of the Affordable Care Act have resulted in over one million persons in California losing access to their plans. While many consumers are finding better and more affordable plans through Covered California, the state’s online marketplace, many others face much higher costs than they are currently paying. The measure Capps voted for would allow insurance companies to continue selling policies to their current customers in 2014 that were in effect as of January 1, 2013.
On Thursday, President Obama announced an administrative action to address this issue. Capps has led the charge to get this change implemented, authoring a letter with Rep. Zoe Lofgren (CA-19) and members of the California Congressional delegation to California Health and Human Services Secretary Diana Dooley and Covered California Executive Director Peter Lee urging them to adopt President Obama’s proposal quickly, giving consumers the option to renew their 2013 health plans in 2014, without change.
