By the Bay With Judy Salamacha

Yesterday my column was about Councilwoman Nancy Johnson and her love for gardening. She is a SLO Master Gardener and the chairman of Dalia Daze this Friday and Saturday. When she and husband Garry Johnson moved to Morro Bay their first project was remodeling their home, but their daughter moved home to get married, so they planted a garden first, she then joined the Morro Bay and Montana de Oro Garden Clubs of CA and took the classes to become a master gardener. She has been chair of Dalia Daze for years, there will be activities related to planting dahlia, the city’s official flower for 50 years and, butterfly gardens, and recycling. There’s a Flower Display show Friday evening, Los Osos Folk dancers, something new, the Historical Society of MB is having a children’s pageant and the winners will ride in the parade Saturday, Morro Bay 50th, Yes, a Dalia Daze 50th anniversary parade down Morro Bay Blvd at 10 am on Saturday. A week ago there were over 30 entries, it is free, 50th Chairperson Joan Solu wants everyone either in the parade or on the sidewalks watching the parade.

Friday/Saturday Sunday at Pewter Plow Playhouse in Cambria, which I normally don’t report on, but our good friend Mara Purl will be performing with Christopher Land. It is a play that jump started her writing/radio career. The play was Sea Marks, which she wanted to do so it led her to summer stock in Cambria. She found the community so interesting she started writing radio serial dramas that aired on KOttR 30 years ago, for the anniversary and a benefit for the Pewter Plower she and Chris are back to perform it Friday, Sat. Sun. Google Pewter Plow for times and cost. Then Mara is back to perform at the Central Coast Writers Conference 30th Anniversary at the Cuesta College Performing Arts Center with Anne Perry, Victoria Zackheim and Barbara Abercrombie in Women’s Voices. This is underwritten by CC Community Programs and the SLO Foundation and is after the keynote presentation of Anne Perry in discussion with Victoria Zackheim.

We’re reaching out to readers and writers due to Anne Perry’s huge readership. Did you know she will be 76, writes 2 each year that are published by Random House, plus her Christmas novellas and more. Amazing. Friday afternoon also has 12 steps to Become a best selling Amazon Author, or if writers are not ready to publish…we have hourly Craft Talks on Flash Fiction, Poetry, Literary Fiction and Network and Learning with a Writers Club. Saturday will be 4 workshops of 75 minutes each, from fantasy, nonfiction, poetry, character development, theme, adapting your manuscript to other genres, memoir, enhancing your backstory, plus NW golden quill writing competition awards announcement, Lillian Dean Inspiration Award, and Don Maruska will close the Take Charge: Become the Hero of your Talent Story. Big weekend September 19-20, coming up, hope everyone will register. www.cuesta.edu/communityprograms.
