Transformer Starts Fire at Diablo Canyon

PG&E declared an unusual event this weekend. Just after midnight on Sunday, a fire broke out at Diablo Canyon Power Plant’s Unit 2 reactor. According to PG&E, the unit shut down, just as it was designed to do, and Unit 1 kicked in at 100% power. The blaze was caused by a transformer failure east of the plant’s turbine building. It didn’t threaten any of the nuclear reactors at the plant and PG&E wants to reassure the public that there was no release of radioactive material from this event. The unusual event was cleared just after 2:30 Sunday morning. |
