San Luis Obispo, CA -- Five people are dead after three fatal crashes since Friday. The most recent crash was yesterday in Nipomo. Just after 4:20, a Chevy Cavalier crossed a double yellow line and hit a pickup truck near the Hutton Road/Joshua Street intersection. The force of the impact sheared the Cavalier in half. There were three people inside the Cavalier at the time. Two died, including the driver. The driver and passenger of the truck were also taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries. All of the people involved in the accident are from Santa Maria, but their identities are not being released at this time. Officers believe the driver of the Cavalier was driving under the influence of alcohol. A Fresno man died after a crash near Paso Robles Saturday. At about 3:30 in the afternoon, a 15-year-old boy from Avenal was driving westbound on Highway 46 when he crossed into opposing traffic. The 56-year-old Fresno man slowed and swerved to avoid hitting the teen’s SUV, which continued onto the highway’s shoulder, resulting in a head-on crash. The Fresno man’s vehicle ended up off the side of the road and down an embankment resting on the driver’s side. Cal Fire rescuers extricated the Fresno man’s passenger, a 58-year-old woman. The driver was taken to Twin Cities Community hospital where he was pronounced dead. Few other details are being released, no word yet why the 15-year-old was driving or if he was doing so with a learner’s permit.
And at 2 o’clock Friday morning, a crash in Avila Beach claimed the lives of two people and has left the driver facing D.U.I. Charges. 21-year-old Evan Green of Chico was the driver, he and another passenger suffered non life threatening injuries. The California Highway Patrol says 21-year-olds Aaron Beaver of Eureka and Marcus Nelson of Castro Valley were killed when the driver lost control and rolled several times onto the grounds of the Avila Beach Golf Course. The C.H.P. says all four passengers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
All three fatal crashes come on the heals of Tuesday night's crash in which a 16 year old suspected drunk driver swerved off the road and flipped his car into the creek. The driver and three passengers somehow survived. All four are students at San Luis Obispo High School.
