Santa Maria, CA -- The officer who shot and killed fellow Santa Maria policeman Albert Covarrubias Jr. over the weekend is Matthew Kline. Kline shot Covarrubias while officers tried to place Covarrubias under arrest for allegations of sexual misconduct with a 17 year-old girl. In a news conference Saturday, Santa Maria Polie Chief Dan Macagni said Covarrubias was on-duty, working at a DUI checkpoint, when two supervisors attempted to arrest him. He said Covarrubias resisted arrest, and fired his weapon at officers on the scene.
Reports say Kline returned fire, shooting Covarrubias in the chest. Covarrubias later died at Marian Medical Center.
Kline is currently on paid administrative leave while an investigation continues.
