Police Warn Renters of Real Estate Scams in SLO County
|
|
Three people have been tricked into handing rent money over for a house that wasn’t even up for rent! An ad was placed in a local newspaper, listing a couple vacant houses in Grover Beach. The suspects would then meet up with the interested renters, ask them to fork over the cash for advance rent, and have them sign rental contracts. Later, the victims realized that they were scammed out of their money. Since then, three suspects have been arrested and convicted. However, authorities have received information that another scam, similar to this one, is being planned in San Luis Obispo County. To avoid being a victim, make sure you never give a cash deposit for a rental; always verify the identity of the landlord before signing a rental contract; and check to make sure they actually have rights to rent out the property. If you believe you have been scammed, contact local police.
