This weekend, more than a thousand people helped clean up the beaches on the Central Coast. Volunteers gathered Saturday morning at 24 different beaches and collected more than 2,800 pounds of trash and more than 1,500 pounds of recyclables. Volunteers also collected some unusual finds, such as a pair of Victoria Secret underwear from Fiscalini Ranch, a glow stick from the Pismo Pier, 55 pounds of multicolored dog hair and pieces of a sunken boat at Morro Strand. The clean up took place at beaches over a 70 mile stretch from San Simeon to Point Sal. Since the program started in 1985, 700,000 Californians have cleaned up more than 10 million pounds of garbage from the coast. The California Coastal Cleanup day is one of the largest volunteer events of the year. |
