Posted: Monday, 22 September 2008 9:40AM Man Arrested for Attempted Murder-Suicide An elderly man is behind bars after police catch him in the act of trying to kill himself and his wife. Last week, Sheriff’s Deputies in Carpinteria noticed a car that was left running in a driveway had a hose attached to the exhaust pipe and trailing into a home on the 4700 block of Third Street. There were two people inside who were taken out of the house and transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for medical treatment. According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department, 84 year old James Wheeler attempted to murder his wife and kill himself as well via carbon monoxide poisoning. Wheeler was arrested after being treated. He is currently being held in the Santa Barbara County Jail at $1,000,000 bail.
