King Harris rejoined KVEC as anchor and reporter in 2006. He was the station’s news director for several years until 2004 when he moved to KCOY.
His career in broadcasting began one summer at KSFO, where he worked for radio legend Don Sherwood in 1961. Other radio gigs came during and after four years at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where he graduated in English.
King was born in San Francisco. He took to radio, music and records in 1956. He went to Saigon in 1969 with the Navy and taught English to Vietnamese sailors so they could assume control of American boats. He was a studio drummer in Hollywood in the early 70s, and started his television news career in Monterey in 1976.
King’s experience with news on the Central Coast began in 1980, when he anchored for KEYT, Santa Barbara, in 1980. King reported and directed the news until 1996.
He started up Santa Barbara’s first Hispanic TV news operation in 1997, and moved to San Luis Obispo to teach journalism at Cal Poly for three years. After that he joined KVEC. He later became news director of KCOY, and served as managing editor of New Times.
