Highway 1 up the coast to Carmel and Monterey is closed due to fire. Both directions are closed for 12 miles south of Big Sur due to the Coast Gallery Fire. The highway is closed from the south at Esalen, and from the north at Ventana. Take alternate routes like Highway 101 to the 68 or the 46 if you plan to travel north. Call ahead to see if local businesses are open. CalTrans does not know when the road will be reopened.
